How do I get listed in search directories?

Some search engines are strictly human edited directories. This means that you have to manually enter your site information and choose an appropriate category for your site to submit it. This information is then reviewed by a human being who decides whether it will be included in the directory or not. These directories include:

Yahoo! - Yahoo charges a $299/year fee to be listed.
Open Directory Project (DMOZ) - Free to be listed.
Looksmart - Charges a 15 cent per click fee.
